A New Venture

Hello all,

I've been living this experiment for quite some time now: to live life as a Stoic.

Now, this might take a bit of explaining. In common parlance, being 'stoic' means never showing emotion in any circumstance, even when warranted.

I see being Stoic quite differently, and believe the words of the Ancient and Modern Stoics back me up.

In short, being a Stoic means the following:

  1. Knowing WHAT to concern ourselves with and WHEN to do so
  2. Believing that the WHAT has far more to do with US than THEM/IT
  3. Trying with all one's might to live out the cardinal virtues of temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude
  4. Recognizing our Duty to our fellow humans and living that out the best we can

That seems quite simple. In my experience, it is anything but that. It means a complete re-evaluation of one's life, who one loves, what one wants, how one acts, and the list goes on.

What I'd like to do over the foreseeable future is to try to put some of the struggles, triumphs and failures of living my life 'Stoically' into words. My hope is that you might find this vibrant and relevant philosophy of life worth investigating. Ultimately, we all strive to live a coherent life, guided by consistent principles that make sense, bring us happiness, and make us better people.

Thanks for reading and best wishes on your journey.

Brett
